Poland

New you abroad

The largest of the New Europe countries to join the EU in 2004, both economically, and in terms of population, Poland has been the driving force in the resurgence of central and eastern Europe.

Most visitors from to the UK are amazed at the quality of life in Poland. The grey days of the Soviet era are long gone, and the cities are teeming with designer shops, authentic markets, countless restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, and a cafe culture to rival Italy and Spain. Sit in a shady corner of the main square of the old town, in any major Polish city, on a summers day, ice cream, or chilled beer in hand, and its easy to forget that you're not actually in Barcelona or Rome until you come to pay the bill, of course.

New you abroadThe countryside is beautiful too, and the pace of life outside the cities markedly slower. Poland has miles of sandy beaches along the Baltic Sea, with a summer climate similar to, or rather better, than that of southern England. Inland, the summers are noticeably warmer than those in the UK, and the winters considerably colder, with snow commonplace.

Poland is, in fact, a long established medical tourism destination for western Europeans, especially those from Germany and Denmark, who have been coming here for many years, given their geographic proximity. Both the Germans and the Danes are famed for their insistence on the absolute best in medical standards, coupled with a reluctance to pay the prices prevalent in their own countries. The result is that Poland has become, probably, Europes leading medical tourism destination, and, happily, now well within the reach of travellers from the UK.

At New You Abroad we can offer a wide variety of destinations within Poland:

Warsaw www.inyourpocket.com/poland/city/warsaw.html

New you abroadThe capital city is bustling, energetic, happening, and full of contrasts, though without the charm of some of Polands other cities. Warsaw has everything, from a beautifully restored old town, to the majestically dominant, and impressive, Palace of Science and Culture, via a multitude of parks, the best shopping in Poland, a pulsating nightlife and cultural scene.

New you abroadNew you abroadThere are countless flights to Warsaw from all over the UK, making this the most accessible destination in Poland. The airport is located within the city boundaries, enabling a short, quick transfer. For those who wish to spend all, or part, of their stay in a hotel, the options cover every conceivable taste, and budget.

Poznan www.inyourpocket.com/poland/city/poznan.html

New you abroadLocated in the western half of Poland, Poznan is a surprisingly sophisticated, and cosmopolitan, city, roughly halfway between Warsaw and Berlin. With a population of over half a million, it is somewhat larger than Bristol, or Sheffield, and has long been an important business centre in central Europe, and one of Polands most important commercial hubs. The old town, full of cobbles and churches, is either intact, or immaculately restored, and offers a wealth of cultural, shopping, dining, and nightlife options.

New you abroadDexter biofuelsPoznan is increasingly well connected to the UK, and direct flights are now available from Bristol, Doncaster-Sheffield, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Luton and Stansted.

Szczecin

New you abroadEasier on the eye, than it is to pronounce, Szczecin is in the far north western corner of Poland, close to the Baltic Sea, with a benign climate, much more akin to the UK than other parts of Poland It is a pleasant, rather than stunning city, roughly the size of Cardiff, and it has long been the leading centre of medical tourism in Poland, due its close proximity to both Berlin, and Copenhagen. This has attracted many leading surgeons, and dentists to the area, and it has become something of a school of excellence. It has a plentiful supply of quality restaurants, bars, shops, and culture, though most people come here for the quality of the medical care, and the low prices.

New you abroadNew you abroadDirect flights are available to Szczecin airport, from Stansted and Edinburgh, but most people fly to Berlin, which is under two hours away by taxi, or minibus, and, as you would expect, offers an infinite variety of flight options. Transfers are comfortable, and reasonably priced.

 Wroclaw www.inyourpocket.com/poland/city/wroclaw.html

New you abroadOne of Europes hidden gems, Polands fourth largest city is full of parks, bridges, and mediaeval buildings. Located in the south western area of the country, Wroclaw has a vibrant cultural scene, with scores of quality restaurants, cafes and bars, mostly found on, or near to, the stunningly preserved Main Square. Part of Germany prior to the Second World War, many Germans still visit Wroclaw, often for medical tourism purposes. The combination of tourists, students, and culture combine to give Wroclaw a sophisticated, cosmopolitan feel, akin to that found in Bath, or Edinburgh.

New you abroadNew you abroadThere are more flights operating into Wroclaw than ever before. Currently, it is possible to travel into the small, but modern and efficient, airport from Bristol, Doncaster - Sheffield, Glasgow, Liverpool, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, and East Midlands.

Gdansk

http://www.inyourpocket.com/poland/city/gdansk.html

Gdansk, and the adjoining towns of Sopot and Gdynia, collectively make up the area known as the Tricity. Situated on the Baltic Sea, and a long established, strategically important seaport, Gdansk has changed hands several times over the years, and was a free city for a time between the first and second world wars. More latterly, it has become the birthplace of Polish democracy, and two modern day Prime Ministers. The airport is named in honour of the founder of the “Solidarity” movement, and first democratically elected modern day Prime Minister, Lech Walesa.

For the modern day visitor, Gdansk has a beautiful old town, with many interesting buildings and museums, and a marvellous array of restaurant, nightlife, cultural, and shopping options. It is also Poland’s main summer seaside resort, with miles of sandy beaches, and a buzzing, cosmopolitan atmosphere, akin to that of the top Mediterranean destinations.
The modern airport is located close to the city, enabling a short, comfortable transfer. It is particularly well served from the UK and Ireland, with regular flights from 14 different regional airports.
